For the longest time, I thought dry skin and dehydrated skin meant exactly the same thing.
If my skin felt tight after washing my face, I would simply apply more moisturizer and hope for the best.
Sometimes it helped, and sometimes it didn’t.
And honestly, I couldn’t understand why.
It wasn’t until I started learning more about skincare that I realized I had been treating the wrong problem.
They Are Different

One of the biggest skincare lessons I’ve learned is that dry skin and dehydrated skin are not the same thing.
Dry skin is a skin type. It means your skin naturally produces less oil.
Dehydrated skin, on the other hand, is a skin condition. It means your skin is lacking water.
I have BOTH.
I’ve always had dry skin.
But after moving from South Korea to the U.S., my skin changed in ways I never expected.
The summers were hotter, the sun felt much harsher, and air conditioning was everywhere —at work, in restaurants, while shopping, and even at home.
It felt like my skin never had a chance to recover.
No matter how much moisturizer I applied, my skin still felt tight after cleansing.
Even worse, I would wake up the next morning with skin that felt tight, yet somehow oily at the same time—even after applying thick, rich skincare products the night before.
I thought skincare was simply about finding a better moisturizer.
Understanding the difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin completely changed the way I approached skincare.
Skincare isn’t just about what products you use—it’s about how you use them.
Why order matters

One of the biggest things I learned over the years was that the order of your skincare routine actually matters.
When I first got into skincare, I thought every product was just another layer of hydration.
I didn’t really understand why toner came before serum, or why moisturizer was always the last step.
I simply followed the order because that’s what everyone else seemed to do. It took me a long time to understand that each step has a different job.
Skincare Order
- Hydrating Toner
The first step is all about bringing water back into the skin. After cleansing, my skin loses moisture quickly, so this is the step that helps replenish it. - Serum
This is where I target specific skin concerns. Whether it’s extra hydration, brightening, or calming irritated skin, serums are designed to deliver concentrated ingredients. - Eye Cream
The skin around our eyes is thinner than the rest of our face, so I like using a product specifically made for that area to keep it hydrated. - Moisturizer
This is the step that ties everything together. Instead of adding hydration, its main job is to help lock in everything I applied beforehand and slow down water loss throughout the day or overnight.
There’s a reason toners feel almost like water, serums are a little thicker, and moisturizers are the richest step in the routine.
They’re designed that way because each product has a different job.
Hydrating products are meant to deliver water to the skin.
Moisturizers are meant to help keep that hydration from escaping too quickly.
That’s why the order matters.

Once I understood that every step had its own purpose, skincare finally started making sense.
Instead of relying on one product to do everything, I started using products that worked together.
Looking back, it seems so obvious now, but that small change made one of the biggest differences in my skin.
If your skin constantly feels tight after cleansing, moisturizer never seems to be enough, or your skin somehow feels dry and oily at the same time, there’s a chance you’re dealing with dehydration in addition to dry skin.
