Wondering if fragrance-free skincare is really worth it?
For me, it’s a preference, not a rule. I only care about it for my cleanser, toner, and moisturizer.
This post is for you if:
- Strong scents in skincare bother you
- You want fragrance-free products for your face
- You’re not sure if “fragrance-free” means “no smell”
If you’ve read a few of my posts, you’ve probably noticed I say “fragrance-free” a lot.
So today I wanted to talk about why.
I am going to be honest here. There’s no dramatic story.
My skin didn’t suddenly break out from a perfume-y cream. Nobody warned me about fragrance. I am just not a fan of putting one more chemical on my skin.
Why I Prefer Fragrance-Free
It’s simple. Whatever I put on my face stays on my skin all day.
If a product has fragrance in it, that’s just another unnecessary chemical sitting on my skin. The fragrance isn’t there to help my skin. It’s there to make the product smell nice.
And of course, a nice scent is nice. I’m not going to pretend it isn’t.
But once it’s on my face, the scent doesn’t really matter. Nobody else is smelling my toner. Nobody is complimenting my moisturizer. It’s on my skin, not on display.
So for me, it’s an easy choice. I’d rather skip it.
It’s a Preference, Not a Rule
I want to be clear about this part.
I don’t treat fragrance like something dangerous, and I don’t panic when I see it on an ingredient list. It’s just my preference.
I only really care about it for the things I put on my face: cleanser, toner, and moisturizer.
And I keep it simple when I shop. I don’t study every ingredient list. I just look for products that say “fragrance-free” on the label.
If a product has a soft, subtle scent, I’m fine with it. At night, I use the Belif Aqua Bomb Sleeping Mask and the Ole Henriksen Strength Trainer moisturizer. Both have a light scent, and it doesn’t bother me at all.
And with lip balm, I don’t even think about it. I actually love the scent of my Ole Henriksen Pout Preserve. (I talked about it in my lip balm post.)
What I Use Right Now
These are the fragrance-free products I’m using on my face right now.
Cleanser: Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Cleanser

A gentle cleanser that leaves my skin comfortable, not tight. I wrote more about it in my Korean skincare routine post.
Toner: Aestura Atobarrier365 Capsule Toner

Moisturizer: Aestura Atobarrier 365 Cream

My everyday morning cream. A dermatologist friend recommended it when my skin barrier was damaged, and I’ve been using it ever since. More in my moisturizer post.
Moisturizer: Illiyoon Ceramide Ato Concentrate Cream

A friend uses the Illiyoon body cream and kept telling me how good it was. So I bought the cream I can also use on my face. I got it myself on Amazon.
I use it the same way as my Aestura cream. The two take turns. Illiyoon is a little lighter, so I reach for it when Aestura feels too heavy.
It spreads easily and keeps my skin moisturized for a long time. And for the price, it’s an amazing deal.
The tube is huge. My husband and I share one, and it lasts us over a month. He loves it. It’s his main cream, morning and night. We go through it so fast that I now have it on a recurring order on Amazon. (It made my rebuy list, Part 2.)
Products I Stopped Using Because of the Scent
This doesn’t mean I’ve never used anything with fragrance. I have. All three of these were recommended to me, so I gave them a try. And I just couldn’t keep using them.
Ole Henriksen Glow2OH Dark Spot Toner

Ole Henriksen Banana Bright Vitamin C Serum

For both of these, the scent was just too strong for me. It smelled very artificial.
The thing is, I actually think they work well. I had no problem with how they performed on my skin.
But the smell was too much for me. So I gave up on the toner and put it away. The vitamin C serum is a different story. The scent is still hard for me, but it works so well that I kept using it. Lately, the results have been even better, so I’ll probably buy it again when it runs out. (More in my serum post.)
A friend of mine was looking for a vitamin C serum, and I recommended the Banana Bright serum to her because I liked how well it worked. She uses it and says the scent doesn’t bother her at all.
So this really comes down to preference. If strong scents don’t bother you, these might work great for you.
And to be fair, I still love some Ole Henriksen products. This isn’t about the brand. It’s about these two scents.
Trader Joe’s Supreme Hydrating Eye Cream

This one surprised me.
I bought it because I heard it was a dupe for the Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado.
And it doesn’t have any fragrance in it. But the cream itself has its own smell, and I just didn’t like it. It bothered me enough that I stopped using it.
So “fragrance-free” doesn’t always mean “no smell.” The ingredients themselves can still smell like something.
Do I Miss Scented Skincare?
Honestly, no.
I don’t feel like I’m missing anything. My skin doesn’t care how my toner smells, and neither does anyone around me.
So for my face, I’ll keep picking fragrance-free.

Final Thoughts
If you love scented skincare, that’s totally fine. This is just what works for me.
But if you’ve ever put something on your face and thought, “Why does this need to smell like this?”, you might like fragrance-free too.
Do you prefer scented or fragrance-free skincare? I’d love to hear!
